Duffer Brothers’ Next Series ‘Something Very Bad is Going to Happen’ is Coming Soon

The Duffer Brothers have three new series coming to Netflix in 2026. Two of these are farther out, with Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, an animated series returning to the Stranger Things universe coming at some point later this year, and The Boroughs, a sci-fi series set in a retirement community, expected in late 2026. The third show, Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, will be the first to release, with episodes airing on March 26th, 2026.

The eight episode limited series was created by Haley Z. Boston, who will also be serving as showrunner, working under the umbrella of the Duffer Brothers’ new Upside Down Pictures production company. Boston previously wrote for Netflix’s Brand New Cherry Flavor and Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. The Duffers actually even said they “were knocked flat when we first read Haley’s script” because it was so twisted and funny. The Duffers are taking a bit of a step back in the production of this show, instead providing mentoring, guidance, and feedback. This will be the first project released through Upside Down Pictures.

The Plot

If you are missing Stranger Things and looking for the next version of it, then Something Very Bad is Going to Happen will probably not scratch that exact “itch.” The show is an atmospheric horror series that follows an engaged couple, Rachel Harkin (Camila Morrone) and Nicky Cunningham (Adam DiMarco) as they road-trip to the family’s vacation home for their wedding ceremony. Each episode represents one day in the lead up to the ceremony, though Rachel’s paranoia and superstition rise as a number of increasingly strange occurrences unfold. Boston describes the theme of the show as exploring the idea of marrying the wrong person while looking through a horror lens. The show takes inspiration from Rosemary’s Baby and Carrie.

While a horror, the show is said not to rely on jump scares, rather instead building a dark, oppressive, and dreadful mood. Boston explained that the goal is for the audience to “feel the paranoia and the fear that Rachel is feeling,” and for that feeling to persist even when the character isn’t in the scene.

The show will feature a large ensemble cast including:

  • Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones & The Six, The Night Manager) as the bride
  • Adam DiMarco (The White Lotus, Overcompensating) as the groom
  • Jennifer Jason Leigh (Fargo, Annihilation) as Victoria Cunningham
  • Ted Levine (Monk, Big Sky) as Dr. Cunningham
  • Gus Birney (Shining Vale, The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window)
  • Jeff Wilbusch (Unorthodox, Oslo)
  • Karla Crome (The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde, Lazarus)
  • Zlatko Burić (Triangle of Sadness)
