The Boroughs Is Coming This May

Stranger Things… but with golf carts instead of bicycles and the elderly instead of teens. That is the core spirit behind the Duffer Brothers’ next major production, The Boroughs, which is officially set to premiere all eight episodes on May 21st, 2026, on Netflix.

This release marks the finale of an incredible three-month sprint for Upside Down Pictures. It follows the premiere of the psychological horror series Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen (releasing this week on March 26th) and the animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 (dropping April 23rd).

Retirees vs. Monsters

The Boroughs is an eight-episode supernatural drama created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), with the Duffer Brothers serving as executive producers. Set in a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, the story follows a group of unlikely heroes who must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have: time.

At the heart of the story is Sam Cooper (played by Alfred Molina), a grieving newcomer who has recently lost his wife. After a “monstrous encounter,” Sam joins a misfit crew of retirees to uncover a dark secret that proves their “golden years” are far more dangerous than anyone expected.

The Duffers have noted that they’ve wanted to see a “retirees vs. monsters” story ever since the 1985 classic Cocoon. They emphasized that this show won’t treat aging as a punchline. Instead, it’s a coming-of-age story about belonging and purpose—it just happens to feature heroes who are a little older than the Hawkins kids.

A Legendary Cast

The production showrunners joked that their cast brings roughly “350 years of craft” to the screen. The ensemble is a “who’s who” of genre legends:

  • Alfred Molina as Sam
  • Geena Davis as Renee
  • Alfre Woodard as Judy
  • Denis O’Hare as Wally
  • Clarke Peters as Art
  • Bill Pullman as Jack

The supporting cast includes Jena Malone (Claire), Carlos Miranda (Paz), Seth Numrich (Blaine), and Alice Kremelberg (Anneliese), with guest appearances by Ed Begley Jr. and Jane Kaczmarek.
